Greenpeace is an international campaigning organisation that strives to be an uncompromising voice for the environment and a catalyst for ethical, political, commercial and technical change in society. Greenpeace tackles global environmental issues caused by the activities of transnational corporations and governments. Greenpeace engages in research, multilateral treaty negotiations, negotiations with governments and industry, public campaigns, non-violent direct actions and market interventions to further the organization's campaign goals. Greenpeace funds its activities through individual donations from millions of people around the world. The organization does not accept any corporate sponsorships or funds from governments.

The most profound market intervention initiative of Greenpeace to date has been the development and the successful commercialization in 1992 of 'Greenfreeze' hydrocarbon technology in domestic refrigeration. Greenfreeze was developed by Greenpeace as part of the organization's Ozone Layer Protection Campaign to discourage and eliminate the global use of ozone layer depleting and potent global warming fluorocarbon substances, such as CFCs, HCFCs and HFCs in refrigeration. Since 1992 over 150 million Greenfreeze refrigerators have been manufactured in the world. All the major European, Japanese and Chinese manufacturers now produce Greenfreeze refrigerators.

The SolarChill Project is for Greenpeace an extension of the organization's work with Greenfreeze. SolarChill incorporates Greenfreeze technology. It does not contain any fluorocarbons.

With its reliance on solar power, SolarChill is also an extension of Greenpeace's Climate Campaign. The Climate Campaign aims to reduce human contribution to global warming induced climate change. It strives to wean the world off its reliance on fossil fuels by encouraging the rapid uptake of renewable energy generation, such as solar and wind. SolarChill demonstrates in a very practical way how the light energy of the sun can be harnessed to meet very basic human needs, such as the safeguarding of vaccines, medicines and food supplies.

Furthermore, SolarChill demonstrates the interdependence of all issues concerning environmental protection, international development and human health and well being.

Greenpeace has provided coordination and funding to the SolarChill Project.
